And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon

If for some reason you to find yourself in the middle of nowhere one early morning and turn right on a dirt road, the road just before the one that leads to the county dump and landfill, you would pass between two rusty paint-peeling cattle gates on which a wooden sun-bleached sign hangs askew. It reads, Panther Valley RV Park, both P's are colourless and unreadable. It is a place scooped level probably by the same bulldozer used down the road at the dump. It is a short drive down the hill, then the road loops around and brings you back to where you started. Only the adventurous, or very lost, or those lacking in the money to find a better place to stay, would pass through those deleterious paint-peeling gates. If you're the resort type, drive a few miles father down the highway to Curlew Lake to the Golden Eagle's RV Park, where everything is neat and clean and green.
The Panther Valley RV Park could double as the seventh hole on a golf course in Hell. Other than several small patches of uncut grass withered by the lack of water, or the half dozen waist-high wooden posts which support electric outlet boxes and water spigots, the place has the look and feel of any unkempt abandoned lot.
A lone travel trailer is parked amid the tufts of parched grass clumps. The trailer isn't long or short, new or old, but somewhere in-between. A red and white stripped awning snaps in the wind, frayed and torn in places, but still serves the useful purpose of providing shade in the hot months of Summer. A dusty truck is parked next to the awning, it too isn't new or old. On the back bumper of the trailer sits a two-foot high chainsaw carved piece of wood in the form of a feather, as a symbol of truth. The trailer doesn't have the look of a Summer vacationer, and it isn't. It is the last possession of Nathaniel Levee Heart.
If the old saying that you don't have to ride the garbage truck all the way to the dump is true, Panther Vally RV Park is about as close as one can get and not be there. A peaceful quite place, except for muffled traffic sounds that filter down from the old highway above. On the far side of the highway, a sheer rock cliff rises hundreds of feet, topped by changing shades of blue throughout the hours of the day. Clouds of whipped meringue moisture pile high where eagles circle. The air is fresh and clean, despite the closeness of the dump...a juxtaposition of incongruities one might say. Nathaniel Levee Heart sees the beauty in it.
On an August morning, like any other day, was a knot on the string of his life, nothing had changed...everything had changed. The dogs whined to be let out. Twisting and tucking his hand-woven wool blanket just right so no heat would escape, he told the dogs to...Hush! They were not accustom to waiting, and sat by his bed wagging their tails in the dark. The bigger dog Sarah had a long tail and it thumped hard on the trailed floor as if it were the heart beat of a mother drum at a native ceremony. The little dog Micky, forced air to escape from deep down in his throat...it was a silent whine. The man opened his eyes slowly. He was thinking of the cold of winter.
Summers didn't last long in the northern mountains. An August frost was not unheard of, and winter temperatures of twenty to forty degrees below zero wasn't something to joke about. he wondered if the fear of cold and hunger would ever leave him, it was something he carried from childhood. This place would change all the fears he had ever had about himself, and the world around him. This was the place he had chosen to make his stand against all the falsehoods he had mistaken for truths.
Many times while shaving he would look closely at that pie-faced man in the mirror, peering through the steam that fogged his glasses. Most mornings, a smiling ageing mask with warm eyes of sadness nodded acknowledgment; on some days it was the cold eyes of fear, or the strong eyes of anger, but eyes always looking. With a soapy bent finger he would balance his glasses across the bridge of his nose, then lower his now callused palm to swipe first one stubble cheek, and then the other. If he could grow a proper beard he would never shave, but his beard was thin and patchy in places, so shaving over the years had become a sisyphifistic routine, like letting the dogs out, or praying.
Sarah nosed her square head under the man's suntan arm that lay atop the frayed Navajo blanket. Her tail now banging a heyoka(clown) round of missed beats against the wall of the narrow trailer. Bang! Thump, Thump, Bang! He gently scratched her soft long ear, which quickened the tempo. Micky had founded his voice and yodeled in a high-pitched yapping that would have earned him a smack from most of those who call themselves dog-lovers. "Hush, little brother" the man whispered through his tobacco stained teeth. "Let me pee first and get my pants on." Swinging his feet to the floor, he winced as he slowly stood up. In a stoop he shuffled down the short hallway to the bathroom, his hand running over the light switch along the way. The dogs sat waiting, quite now, for they were use to being let out first. Their confusion in the change of habit must have stunned them to silence, as an owl hooted from somewhere in the tall pine trees along the road bank.
Nathaniel Levee stood barefoot in front of his less- than- palatial trailer door. He arched his back and stood on this toes, trying to straighten the effects of sleeping curled up in a ball all night. He fastened his trophy silver belt-buckle slowly, the one he had never worn before, because it reminded him of something he thought he could never achieve again. With a gnarled hand the old man opened the trailer door to the blue-gray of morning. "Well, you gotta pee or what?" Both dogs bolted, each to their own way.
It would take several minutes for the water to boil for his coffee. The man sat down on the trailer step rolling a cigarette, thinking of other mornings. "Don't go there Natty-Boy" he said, through the hacking cough of his first puff. "Damn things, gonna kill me one of these days." He took another puff to ease the spam. In the quite of morning, his bare feet rested in the cool dirt, an old man waiting...for what he did know. With a gravely voice he sang, "Wakantanka unsimalaye"...a song for mercy. The dogs came trotting up to sit next to him, and they waited too. After saying good morning to the blood-red sun rising slowly in the smoke-gray sky, he drank two cups of coffee with half & half and the last of his brown sugar. He tinkered with this- and-that then said, "Come on kids, we're going to the store. This man can't live without his sugar." Saying this, he chuckled to himself. His wife Corissa has left him almost three years ago to the day, their tumultuous ten-year marriage had been one he had gambled everything on and lost, or so it seemed.
He told himself there must have been a time when Corissa Kickking was happy, he just couldn't remember when, no...that wasn't true. There were happy times, just to few. Nathaniel understood many things about his wife, things maybe she didn't even understand about herself. There had been something about the way she had smiled at him on that first day in his classroom. He knew better, he understood and had learned to deal with his student's occasional infatuations. He had no time for such foolishness he told himself, and yet all during that tedious semester she sailed her moon-shadowed dhow closer into his heart. Nathaniel was a veracious student in areas she cared little about: he enjoyed making love, she had sex, he liked expensive wines and exotic foods, traveling to places where tourist are seldom seen, She was happy with a six-pack, ordering a Big Mac with fries to take home and sit in front of the wide-screen. He shuddered and married her because he loved her.
She had been born with a gross defect that had required multiple surgeries to correct. By the age of four, she had experienced more pain than most people experience in a lifetime. A thin hidden scar attested to the world-renowned surgeon's skill with a scalpel. Corissa was a miracle baby, but the scars she carried within had never healed, and throughout the years of her life, she had acquired new ones. Those deep scares were unseen yet fully known icebergs that gashed open the hull of Nathaniel Levee's life.

The Bald Bomb Shell

"He's hold up in that mountain bunker looking for a fight. Many natives say he's mad, wasp-shook-up-in-a-jar-mad."
"How deep is that mine shaft bunker?"
"Boss, please don't go down there, he ain't worth it. He ain't alone neither, he's got a snotty kid with him. They're religious fanatics boss, and dangerous, trust me boss, I know. The village people say, he only comes out at night. He sets bombs, starts fires, and ravages innocent women. Nobody sees the kid, he never lets her out. If what they say is true, she's nuts too."
The heat of the midday sun shimmered above the jungle canopy. A canvas of greens and yellows painted a picture of what was needed to stay alive on the island. Kill, or be killed, was the jungle motto. The small farmers around the village plowed their fields, and raised what they could. Fear ruled their lives. Babies cried from hunger pains. Off planet land owners and the military looked away, as if they were blind to the situation. Things were bad, real bad...add in a blood-sucking pit viper with a taste for human cruelty, and more people were going to get hurt.
Standing six-foot-two with pecs flexed, cable-steel arms raised two gold cup forty-five automatics, two colt guns, with the kick of a Missouri mule. It was going to be a fight to the death if necessary. So many greedy power hungry bastards made slaves of the poor, causing suffering among good people. Raw power ruled. A pair of broad purple shoulders vowed to change all that.
The two big cats snarled, rubbing their sides along his muscled thighs, deep purrs followed.
"Who loves ya babies?" He said, as he ran the butt-end of his pistols down their arched backs. "Now stand back, I have work to do."
"Boss, that old gold mine has a trap door. I was down there myself, you'll be breaking the planet's military rules. The mining guild in this quadrant stickily forbids outside interference in local affairs. You'll be breaking the law."
"I need a rope, a long rope. Get me two ropes, we'll shinny down that hole somehow."

The Magic of Love

Not so long ago in a place East of a great ocean, and West of the rising sun, a strange story is ofter told about the magic of love and courage.
Deep in a dark pine forest on the side of a raggedy mountain sat a little shack, an enchanted house filled with many wonderful things. It was surrounded by a high hedge of long thorned briers to keep unwanted guests out. Welcomed guests saw only roses of many delightful colours.

On a dark and stormy night when all the evils in the hearts of men were chasing as snow white unicorn, it leaped the high tangled fence in her effort to escape from blood thirsty hunters.

As soon as the unicorn's hooves touched the ground inside the magic garden, she changed into a little girl. Her wavy mane became long blond hair, her four feet, two, her brown eyes, blue. Still shaking in fear and not knowing what to do, the little girl drawing up all her courage, knocked on the old battered door.

The house was dark, yet the door opened, and the little girl stepped inside. Outside the most hideous and evil demon and monsters flew round-and-round the tall thorn hedge. They could not enter the rose-ring garden because of loves magic.

She could hear their screams of anger, hate, and frustration, but they could not enter the garden because the magic was to strong.

"What have we here?" Said Baba Yaga, holding a small lantern in her hand. The girl tried to explain that had happened to her, but a fever of fear and confusion held her words as if caged. The little girl felt like a dumb-bell, a block-head, a fool, and yet out of all the places in the world, she knew she was safe there.

Baba Yaga was not pleased at being awakened so late at night, however, being a kind soul she ushered the little girl into the kitchen, and ask her to sit at the kitchen table. The house was very dark, except for the light Baba Yaga held in her hand.

"What do you want?" she ask.

"Please help me." said the frightened little girl in the only way she knew now. She tried to explain, but it was as if her language was from another realm, and in truth it was. The little girl didn't want to frighten Baba Yaga. The things that had chased her were to horrible to describe.

Not long after their short conversation, Baba Yaga walked the little girl to the fence gate. She murmured words, but the frighted little girl could not understand what she said. Closing the garden gate behind her, the once beautiful snow white unicorn had only forgiveness and love in its heart.
The animals and the trees of the forest whispered to her, "We will protect you, have courage. We will teach you to fight those who like to kill for sport. We will teach you real magic."
The little girl learned many things from her friends in the forest. The magic they share, she used to help others. She returned many times to Baba Yaga's house. They laughed, sang songs, and told many stories together while learning to use their magical gifts.

I Love to Fly

I know how to pilot a plane. Getting off the ground is easy, even in bad weather. I'm just not very good at landing. Now here is a beauty you could land in a hayfield with no problem... as long as no one asks to see my pilot's licence. Hours in the air costs a lot of money...maybe someday I'll be legal again.
"Why walk when you can fly?", as my friend Rita (Bird) is known to say.

The Dance of Pain

Thumb-size cottonballs float,
Q-tip teardrops flick fast from high,
Through grey morning open eye.
Humble blanket warmly awaits the touch.
Nothing sticks, that time is yet to come...
Weeping, seeping, oozing hot from fever wound remembered.
Asciepius scalpel held ready....
Another scaring scar?
Naja coils to strike, somber slumber,
Niki's wings of knowing is nearer than we know.

Truth Bear

In a parallel worlds, reality is not always easy to define. The few who share the ancient blood line of a people from a parallel hidden planet, are able to travel through the dimensions of both worlds.

I am bound by a sacred oath to reveal only what is necessary, for to say more could cause a rift in space to open, spilling matter into antimatter. There are others like myself who were raised on this parallel world thinking something was terribly wrong. A world of angelic-demonic humanoids, devoid of common sense, hellbent on destroying their planet by greed and the enslavement of all what they call, "lesser life forms."

Yes, I was raised on the planet called Earth, but Earth is not my only home. With the aid of a famous Captain, who held my hand, and guided me to the portal between worlds. I am equipped with the ability to travel through space easily. As you may have guessed, the Captain is my hero, and my secret love. He lives on the other side of the one world which is forbidden to me at this time. It is his choice to shoulder the responsibility of saving Earth, and the many who fight for the Republic Federation.

Perry's Pirate Pilot

"If they catch you down there, they'll hang you, or throw you out an open air lock. One way or another, you'll end up dead meat...savvy?"

How does one describe a genetic hybrid humanoid? Captain Björn's name was the only thing normal about him. If he was from Earth; RU-22, 4k9 of the Snoopelite system, or one of the many colonized planets and asteroids in the Republic Federation was a mystery. A six-foot tall, heavy-built hairless sauropod with nasty habit... cannibalism. Being notability known as a killer who ate his enemys, his reputation had followed him from the farside of many galaxys.

"A runt like you won't last a day down there."

Three inch upper and lower yellow incisor-tusks mashed together spraying viscous mucus as he spoke. Stefn Perry wiped his face off with the full length of his shirt sleeve, and stepped back half a dozen steps. Now his back was against the obiting space station's bulkhead. If the big lunker stepped forward, it was going to get real messy. Perry frankly wasn't packing.

"Tell me this, Captain, how do you communicate wearing a space suit? Let me guess, some type of natho-dental-vacuum unit. Am I right?" Perry smiled to himself, knowing Böjrn would either kill him right there and then, or he would negotiate.

"Eh! You, you..." Björn snarled. His black leather outfit creaked when he moved, one boot scraped on the metal floor louder than the racket coming from the bar lounge down the hall. Perry slid his back sideways along the bulkhead as the Captain stuttered in rage. With forty-four discoloured gnashing pearls gaping, Bootstrap Perry hoped he was reading the creature correctly; anthropomorphic communication was his forte. Guareyes popping, large circles of pungent moisture suddenly became visible as the beast lifted his massive arms in a threating posture.

"That hunk of junk you call a cargo freighter probably couldn't make it to the Aragnan star system. I bet you've never set foot on BloriX, have you? You're big, so you like to intimidate...am I right?"

"I kill you Viceroy boy. Sqeesh you like a boeufbug."

"I've never been afraid of drowning, and I like my sourmash with a milgoo chaser. Come on, mama's boy...cut the bad-boy act and let me buy you a shebe brew or two at the bar."

"Whatfurrr..."

"You're a cunning linguist Captain, a loquacious loofah of the lubber line...we have business to discuss.

Chances Are Very Good

Stefn Perry had always been a small man with a big dream. Using his head and his heart, and all the courage he possessed, he had found a perfect Blanchfeur touchstone on a world where life was a memorable adventure, or you died alone with no friends. True, the gem had cost him more than most space travelers were willing to pay. He had paid four years of his life fighting for a chance at happiness. Knowing Captain Bjorn's spacecraft would soon be orbiting above BloriX's blustering stratosphere, Perry prepared for what he hoped would be a new beginning, his second chance. There was only one hitch to his plan. Before discovering the priceless precious gem stone, Stefn Perry was just an ordinary guy... now he was something different, and he was not alone. Deep, miles deep down, while exploring regional ice caves on a journey from his station's outpost, Perry had discovered a clear crystalline crypt of unknown origins, a portal to another world.

Durning the winter months on the spherulite planet, howling storms raged across dark wind swept ice fields. Subzero temperatures dropped below weather instruments reading ability, on those days, only God knew how cold it really was. Even the giant woolly beasts indigenous to BloriX, hybernated in subterrestial ice caves that honeycomb the planet's northern hemisphere. Being the most dangerous planet in the Arangan star system, it is a place of dread and terror. Few had ever dared land a ship on the little known planet, and of those that did...few, very few ever returned to Earth. Stefn "Bootstrap" Perry was one of the lucky ones.

As an amature spelunker, Perry had spent several remarkable years searching for the fabled Blanchfleur touchstone. As a private entrepreneur with no strings attached to any company or government, he had made arrangements with the Captain of a Catalan cargo vessel hauling illegal ore through the outer limits of the Arangan system. Having little to lose, and everything to gain by booking passage with the known scallywag of a pirate, a parley under the most unusual circumstances had taken place between them.

The current rawbone snowstorm continued to batter the lone outpost settlement. For over three weeks grey skies generated tons of new ice, blanketing the already deeply-covered survival station. Stefn wasn't a man to roll over and give up in defeat. Born on the planet Earth, his Scotch-Irish and Native blood ran hot against adversity. His older half brother, Commander Norton Dean Sisiyou had called him a fool. Actually, Stefn enjoyed the planet his brother had nick-named, "The Arktos Ice Hell."

Weeks earlier, Stefn had received an unexpected and somewhat garrulous communication from the Catalan ship's Captain. Translation computers mangled parts of the message due to the atmospheric storm, but enough was readable for Stefn Perry to know that Captain Woodstick Björn had returned as per their agreement. The smisauropod savage with hair may have earned his reputation by "hook, or crook", as the old saying went, but a "deal is a deal."

Ingenuity

Take a Native, mix in a little Canadian Scotch-Irish, and presto! Teamwork.

Window Between Worlds

"You have no idea what I had to go through to earn these gold bars on my shoulders."
"The fruit salad array on your chest gives me a clue to your ranking Commander. I have been told, Special Force Units are on standby alert, and shield forces are holding strong."
Dressed in blue velvet, the spy master's cape draped artfully over the arms of his overstuffed office chair. His smooth voice revealed no emotion, and yet his cold steel-blue eyes were expressive. Wheeling quickly he pointed to the star grid map that flashed on the wall screen.
"You can be assured we are doing everything in our power to find a solution to this delicate situation. I have been informed of your personal involvement."
"Have you? There are things even you don't know. If they harm her, if they hurt her in any way, I will hold you personally responsible."
"Surely Commander you don't hold me responsible in this matter? She is being held prisoner in a fortress of almost unfathomable depth. Just getting messages in and out of that wormhole is tricky business. A faithful courier was killed relaying her recent communication. Do you expect me to send in another courier after that?"
"I expect you to do your job." A meat-hook sized fist slammed down on the oak desk with determination. You have the ability, you must bring her out yourself. "She is...she is my, my..." Bracing both hands on the desktop, Commander Norton Dean Siskiyou leaned forward, his broad shoulders and bull neck ridged.
"Just suppose I get lucky, and suppose you give me access to a warship fitted with special military password protocol...again the spymaster pointed a finger to the star chart. My getting through that outlaw space quadrant is going to be risky business, very risky." The evergreen grid flickered as Commander Siskiyou walked over to the wide-screen. He touched the target area where the women known as Faye Grimm was last reported. Bringing his clinched fist up to his graying temple, he closed his eyes and sighed. "If you get through please give her this, and order her...no, ask her to engage her electro-heating atomic unit. I advise you to stand back, and have your personal shielding unit on high. The Hodag's will have planted one, or more nano bugs. Whatever is bugging at that time will be sent to another plane of existence."
The small blue marble glowed with swirls of white as if it were somehow live. Darou Rudof Treacle closed his bronze fingers over the object that gyrated slowly in the palm of his hand, and carefully slid it into a inside pocket of his lavender velvet robe.
"I will take the brunt of any backlash that may result. What you hold in your hand is classified, top secret; only the scientist that made it, myself, and you know of it's existence."
Standing to his full height of four-foot-three, Darou Rudof gathers several rolled cylinders under his arm, touches his chest, his lips, and his forehead in one fluid motion. "May the spirit of the cosmos guide our steps."
"One more thing Mr. Treacle, I suggest you first visit the planet called Arctos. There is a man, he may be hard to find, and he may not want to help you. If you can convince him how important Faye Grimm is...

The Real Men In My Life

"The Roaster Spit and Newmar's chiffon dragons."

I'm starting to work on a story about my miss adventures as a (excuse the pun) cocktail waitress, and bartender during the seventies in San Fransisco... a happy time before most of my sweet princes died.
This one will cost me a new pair of windshield wipers...

Sometimes it takes several fairy god mothers to give this chicken the courage to take Belly Dance lessons.

"Vida Girl, strut your butt out of that rut, and shake that fantail." They whisper...rather loudly.

Mother Nature's Presence

See, the river ice is melting.
Swimming geese call to me,
Voices singing, "Spring!"
Wonders flow in feeling new life,
Giving my hope more meaning.
This is understanding love.

Bear in the Woods

In the Fall of 1966 my brother David and I hooked school to go deer hunting, (I should say pouching). It was something we did, not because we loved hunting, it was a necessity.

David and I split-up, he going one way and I another, as we did later in life. I wanted to check out a little meadow that had a creek flowing through it, but to get there I had to walk through a thicket of buck brush. Bear people scare me, always have scared, scare me to this day. I have never had the desire to shoot one, but I would if I had to.

Walking through thick buck brush is looking for trouble. The side of the mountain where I stood was thickly covered, and to walk around was to far. At the time I had a small M1 carbine, and ahead of there were many deer trails, so the going wasn't to rough, just the same my heart was pounding with fear.

Holding the carbine high over my head I waded in. Half-way through the buck brush thinned, and I could see the deep green meadow. The wind must have shifted, because I caught a whiff of scat. Growing up as I did, and having the daddy that I had, hunting and tracking by then was second nature.

I would walk several yards then do a 360 degree turn-around, just to be safe. If you've ever been hunting and had a big doe follow close behind, only to bellow at the back of your neck...well, you learn to turn around once in awhile. I circled around while walking, looking for a good spot to view the meadow. Woo! There in the middle of the path, a big fresh pile of bear scat. Oh god, just my luck. It was late mourning, this stuff was steaming it was so fresh. My knees were shaking as I stooped for a better look, a natural thing to do. I saw David out the corner of my eye on the far side of the meadow, and waved him over.

"Damn! David, look at this bear shit, he's been eating corn." David gave the most disconcerted, disagreeable, disgusted look I ever saw, and walked away cussing me under his breath. I stood there a while before I could put two-and-two together in my head. Then rolled on the ground laughing.

Of course I'll never let him live it down...more ammunition for laughs. I no longer have to carry a gun to hunt food, or to protect myself from man, nor beast. That's a blessing. Now I just carry a big stick, it's called a dictionary; I have a big one, and it's growing. OHooo!

Coyote's Instinct

Miles of broken white-line ribbon snakes across the Nevada flat land as if somehow alive. Dropping down from the foothills, the black-top road ahead shimmers. Earth and sky undulate in unison, making preparation for the hottest day of the year. Rust coloured dirt devils twist along sunbleached fence posts, as a jack rabbit squats in the dirt.
"This will take a minute."
"Hurry up honey. This place gives me the creeps."
Several grasshoppers take flight from an alligator loafer that steps down to the hot pavement.
Without warning, the slamming of the car door, sends the rabbit zigzagging for cover under sagebrush beside a shallow arroyo. In the distance a coyote stops, turning his head towards a high-pitched piercing sound.
"Sweet Jesus, if it isn't Mr. Nixson, you old son of a gun. How long has it been, three, maybe four years? You must be doing real good. Holly Cow! Just look at those fancy shoes." The sidewalk and glass doors in front of the casino glitter in pulsing red and yellow cold neon. Roy Massy's blue eyes sparkled past deep wrinkled leather above an unkempt handlebar mustache. His wide brim Stetson matching his smile.
"Hello Roy! You still working on that ostrich ranch on the other side of Panther Valley?" Nixson looked over the jockey-sized cowboy who stood in front of him; his eyes catching his own reflection in the glass as he adjusted his sun glasses.
"Real sorry to hear about your wife Mr. Nixson. Did they catch who did it?"

Looking Foward To Spring

It's a grey overcast day, I do love the snow tho. Maybe it will snow today. Spring can't be that far away...the smell of new green grass. Of course there will be the weeks of nothing but mud to contend with first. Mic and Sarah's muddy feet to clean before they come back into the cabin, hopefully the water pipes will unfreeze by then...that would be nice. Now I have a deeper meaning to the term "Spring Cleaning".
I like to clean, and after all these months of not having hot and cold running water, I'm going to clean up a storm, then soak in the tub for hours. The simple joy of a shower and clean cloths can be a blessing to look foward to.
How far away is the life I use to know, only memories now, the taste of time past is bittersweet. I was blessed then, and even if at times it's painful to look back, I know that I am blessed today with a most precious gift, this day. May I always remember what my daddy use to tell me when I was a little girl, "Pay attention chickadee, or you'll miss what's really important in life." I may be nothing more than an frowsy frog in a deep well, but my spirit kindles kindly with love and hope. What more of a blessing could my family have given me?

Staying Alive

I will find a way,
Through a jungle of ice.
In the cold of winter's bite,
Bleary-eyed in blind trust,
I will blaze a buoyant trail.

Poppy

Like looking through broken window pane?
Ice fragments are all that now remain?
Casting light on a perfect memory.
Eyes on weeping heart of love,
On history of a dreaming child,
Before the dance of life became,
Fighting shadows rain of lies and hurt.
Blood wine ghosts of family's wounds,
Whispers softly, "Trust is now responsibility."
Time flows through you to choose.
Bitter sweet, as cold teeth bite deep.
Society rules who's fit for life?
Outside sign reads, "This property is condemned".
A soul's closed door, hinge broken into.
Fight on, perservere
Never to forget, mending mire.
The threatening thraws of scoffing maw.
Stand up with no regret, regrow glad-hand.
Stand, stand, stand up sweet mavin.
Strong is the Raven's Knight.
Wing-shield of rainbow colours above,
Brave is love adore your paladin.

My Sarah

You are spots and dots, my dappled friend,
A perfect black diamond at your peak.
Love is all you give me,
Love is all I seek.
We walk this road together,
You always at my side,
Astride we stroll, our footfalls,
A rhymic rhythem glide.
Life springs green,
Through Summers dust, Autumns leaves,
The white of Winters snow.
To the time of days,
Through months and years we go.
May the loylity in me,
Match the nobility in you.
"A teacher's pet" some may say,
And that very well may be true,
But which is the teacher,
You on your four feet,
Or me on my two?

Remembering You

So many years have gone by,
So much in me has changed,
So much of you in me remains.
All the love of who you were,
Is so much of who I am.

May, 23, 2007

No claw paw can hold me,
Soft lips touch my ear.
This spirit runs free.
An open palm waves,
Sweet in the scent of your hand.
To touch, to taste, to tickle,
The thrill gentle, fan of colour,
Gift sent from my mother.
Be free and fly if you choose,
And stay with me awhile.
Honey words of love my muse,
Drift down from above...

Getting Real

Ever been so cold and hungry, so lonely, that you are willing to rip your guts out and eat'm for breakfast? I feel like a junkyard dog behind a cyclone fence who has been teased, stick poked, and baited beyond the point of sanity. Society tells me, "be good, keep quite, go lay down".
What a mind job. Ferruled is my lilac walking stick. Named her "Herrenvolk thumper", and I plan to use it because I know how.

Bear Toonies and Loonies

To visit Grand Forks is like stepping by in time to the 1950's. A lovely main street with Christmas lights reflecting through prisms of glass and ice. Several folks sit around outside coffee shoppe tables, wearing warm wool scarfs, colourful hand knit hats and gloves, as winter armor against the cold. Paper cups steam, ribbons of espresso drift to delight the senses as afternoon fades into night.
Across the street a hippy dressed women steps into the theatre ticket booth. Three toonies, is the price to escape, as the big screen awaits hungry eyes. Two seven-year-old girls past fifty smile while grinding their roll-your-own cigarettes out in a thin tin ashtray. A light snow starts to fall, a few thumb sized flakes catch eyelashes as they dash under awning cover.
"Two please." says the oldest, "My treat."
Popcorn smells roll out as the door is held open. An out-stretched hand, a tattooed arm, heavy with charms and beaded bracelets, accepts the magic tickets. A glass case of sweet goodies in cadence call out.
"Pick me!" yells a box of mini Butterfingers.
"No me!" shrieks the dark coated Goobers in a nutty high pitched shrill.
Intensive is the clammier, a reeling mix of what to choose.
"A big bucket of popcorn please." says the younger.
"Extra butter" coos the silver looped-lip hippy, her spiked hair tipped in red.
"Oh Yes, of course," voice the two as one.
With a fist full of napkins, cradling a bucket of gold, the two walk through the inner theatre doors to be swooped away in an adventure of another world.

Christmas Eve

Blessed be this county,

No lights, no plumbing, no TV.

Soft ice-balls fall thick as thumbs,

Warm fire thaws the numbed.

Where big birds come for scraps,

Thrown out kitchen window.

Meleagris Gallopavo!

I'm surround by turkeys.

As my eyes stare at the marvel,

They are hunting, scratching, pecking.

Round and round the cabin they go,

Now by wood pile covered in snow.

Long beards drag as feathers ruffle,

Big Tom is first in line to find gold mine.

Excitement builds, fast food thrills,

On December's table cloth of white,

Gobbler's corncob Christmas dinner.

I am no able,

To kill the life I see.

Green eggs and can Spam, road kill jerky,

That's good enough for me.

Look! See! Beauty's free.

Blessed be the bounty.

I know expect you understand,

Unless you know this Highland man.

Meleagris Gallopavo!

These eyes stare at the marvel.

Blessed be the free.

Blessed be the Wild Turkey.

Circus Ring

Under the Big Top of starry starry night,
Lolly pop sucker's pay to see fool's sight.
Peanuts! Buttered Popcorn! Hot!
"Pink Cotton Candy Dandy, your ticket please."
Crowds wait, anticipate, stir on,
Benches full in moving bright light of yellow.
Circus noises, a mix, lions roaring,
Elephant trumpet,
Plumed horses prance, and whinny,
Awaiting ring master's pro-fun treasure.
The dance of fear for money, sweet as honey.
Tent flaps flutter in summers breeze.
"Center Ring, all eyes please."
Tall silk hat with bullhorn,
Mustache man waves his hand,
Hushed murmurs low, excitement builds,
Ready for the thrills in traveling circus show.
Sitting next to papa, sissy's all aglow,
When melting ice cream cone finds home, in lap land.
Oh No! Her clean white pinafore!
Breast pocket hanky comes to rescue daddy's little girl,
Two scoops in lap, slide down, and whorl away.
Now everythings, Okay.
Lights dim then brighten, Lions,
And Tigers, and Bears to frighten,
Jump through hoops of fire.
When under rainbow blanket,
in comes Dumbo elephant.
Tiger leaps to thrill of people,
Teeth and claws well trained.
Heavy swaying mountain steeple,
With trunk held high...the chase.
Tiger rides holding, in rhythm of the race.
With chair in hand is the man.
Whip says, Snap! Crack!
Small town crowd purr,
For more, applauding tamers knowing.
Just then, trunk grabs tiger's tail.
Black and yellow blur, rainbow faster,
Round and round,
Then up up the clawing tiger.
Up the swing, through tent tops dream.
Wide open mouths, the sight sent such a shock,
When Dumbo grabbed a feather from,
Front row greenhorn's cowboy hat,
And took off flying right behind,
That long tailed pussy cat.
Top hat tips back,
looking up in awe and wonder.
Now two stars burning in the night,
Their flight so bright together.
Twin comets on their way,
To play, "The Big Top Circus Milky Way".

Christmas Day

A moist fog rolled under the full moon after midnight, flocking the forest trees in a thick blanket of ice. Deer tracks weave crisscross designs in the crusty snow over the frozen river. My coffee sits on the window sill, swaying steam melts a frosty pattern on the silver-white glass. This is a winter wonder land of beauitful sights, as an orange-shafted flicker with feathers ruffled, calls out in a clear voice as it flits from tree to tree looking for food. Sarah my dalmatian-boxer and Micky my fox terrier, nap on the rug near the wood stove as it snaps, crackles, and pops, and I count my blessings.
This year I have a warm cabin, food, and hot and cold running water. I do my best at not letting the ghost of memory past invade my heart with sorrow. Holding myself tight, I fight off emotions that try to spoil this Christmas day. Writing helps keep me sane through the loneness, and so it's time to pour myself another cup of coffee, and put another log in the stove.
This afternoon I'll have Christmas dinner with good friends.

Haven't been to a movie in what, five, or has it been six years?
Next week I'm hauling my ass over the boarder to see,
"The Golden Compass."
I have no idea how many loonies it will cost me. It bears repeating, I think toonies are going to be a hot item, even in the states.

Have Mercy

Humans, my children will have no place to live in the future and neither will yours if you continue your blind greed for more, more, more. How much are your children and your children's children worth? I will fight for mine, will you?

The Magic Cook Book

The mysterious Mr. Victor Pendragon is a rich man, rich beyond most peoples ability to know, he is also a fat man, yet surprisingly light on his feet. He wares expensive smoking jackets, brightly colour ascots, and purple silk pajama bottoms, no matter what the time of day. Of course his outfits are all tailor made, as are his amber velvet slippers, which curl up slightly at the toes. Those slippers, which he calls this ground grabbers, are elaborately embroidered with winged dragons in a emerald green satin stitch. He moves with a grace many would mistake as dainty, perhaps he is. Being a multifaceted personality, he honors all aspects of himself. Rarely does he leave his home, except to work outside in his beautiful fascination garden. Victor leads a quiet life, and of the few close friends who come to visit; none of whom think it unusal that such a large man seems to float about, his small slippered feet barely touching the many priceless Persian carpets throughout his simple home.

That is but one...Gertrude Elizabeth Pearlskin. Gertrude Elizabeth (never called Trudy, or Liz) is short, thin, and frail looking. A deceptive judge is looks. Indeed! Her long greying hair she wares stylishly piled on top of her perfectly shaped head, which she says mades her look tall...and she is always right of course. Her bright blue eyes and sharp featured face look stern, and yet her smile can melt the ice of cold heartedness. She wares no makeup and confesses, "It wouldn't do much good, because what you see is what you get... á la natural." Shape shifters know how to get what they want. Gertrude is a master shape shifter, and a honored member of the Scottish rite of the thirty-three degree. Not that any knowledge of such things can stop the passion that burned in her heart for Victor Pendragon. It's a sad thing to love someone yet pretend you don't, almost as sad as not feeling loved at all. Victor seems to be content with his life as it is, and if that mades Victor happy, it's okay with her...that is to a certain point. There are times when a full moon-shadow covers the low rolling hills above the heather covered moors of lockmab. In those times, a special magic is a foot, and the lonely crys of a spirit hound can be heard thought the fog in the wee hours of the morning.

Now Pendragon is in the habit of giving small get-to-gethers. Afternoon teas and dinner parties are his forté. Needless to say, the man can cook, and his friends are whizzes in the kitchen as well. The joys of friendship and good food are not wasted on those who entered 512 Banister Lane in the quiet village of Lockmab Scotland. The highland moors is were magic is an everyday thing, and "Shaking-a-stick" is taken very seriously. Both Shay O'Brannon and Bobby Twofeathers are also big men. Jeff Fruitnick on the other hand is tall, thin, and distingousingly bald, and he is very picky about what he eats. These four men with the addition of Gertrude Pearlskin makeup a motley cadre of friends. Indeed! Each have their strong points, each have a secret, and each have no idea of the wondrous adventure they are soon to be drawn into while sitting at the dinner table of Victor Lightfoot Pendragon, who is sometimes lovingly called Twinkletoes behind his back.

On the wall in Victor's dinning room hangs a large medieval tapestry, a courtly scene of elegant dressed Ladies, and several Borzoi dogs on the steps of an mysterious old manor. The tapestry had been a precious gift from Victors mother. The gift which always brings him a myiad of fond memories of his childhood days. Below the tapestry sits a birds-eye-cherry credenza, a Steuben crystal decanter with six cordial glasses arranged in a circle sits atop a heavy silver tray. There too sits a tall luster-blue porcelain vase over flowing with deep purple lilacs, the scent of which drifted in invisible ribbons throughout Victor's home.

"Ding Dong" the doorbell rang.
"Ah, that must be Robert, he's never fashionably late."
Pendragon in his usual attire dances through the kitchens archway, and down the hallway to the front door, leaving several copper pots and pans steaming and bubbling on his prize Vulcan stove. Two cutting boards arried with: sage, tarragon, basil, marjoram, mint and flat-leaf parsley awaited his return. Pendragon hums and waves his french knife to the sound of music as if it were a baton. He opens the door knife in hand.
"Whoa Maestro! Is this going to be a dinner party, or a Dante's nightmare?"
"You're just in time Bobby, this knife could use a keener edge.
"Both Bobby and Pengragon shared a dislike for electric knife sharpeners as a means to rune a perfectly good knife.
"What are we cooking up tonight Maestro? By the way, your fresh-cut lilacs smell wonderful."
"Let me say this my dear man, no opossum roadkill nor toad legs are on the menu tonight, now into the kitcken with you. Do chop the rest of the herbs I have prepared, and when you finish, please sharpen this knife."
Handing the knife to Bobby, both leisurely amble into the kitchen.
"Real fine like mincemeat?" Grinning Bobby washed his hands: rolled up his sleeves, sharpened the french knife, and commences dicing the herbs, stoping only for a sip of sherry from the crystal tass that Pendragon had placed on the marble countertop.
"Yes, real fine, the salad dressing you will create is pure magic. The recipe came to me in a dream. It's already worth a fortune, and you my dear boy will be the first to put it together."
Bobby's smile resembles that of a small child who has done something brilliant in front of his parents who are pleased.
Again the doorbell rang, this time it is Shay O'Bannon and Jeff Fruitnick.
"My Word Jeff, you look like Larry lizard suit. Where ever did you get that outfit?"
"Now don't be cruel Boss, or I won't let you win at chess anymore. I picked this number up at Antonio's on Hill Street. It fits, I like it, and you will get used to the bright colour."
"Victor you look charming as usual."
"Thank you Mr. O'Bannon. Is that a new bow tie your wearing?. I don't believe I ever see a rainbow bow tie before...it suits you."
Shay O'Bannon adjusted his bow tie as both he and Jeff stepped through the ivy festooned front doorway, and follow Pendragon into the kitchen.
"Nice outfit Jeff." Bobby whispers with a sheepish grin, and polishes off his sherry as if it were whiskey in a shot glass.
Ding Dong! "Ah, that will be Miss Gertrude. Please excuse me for a moment...

Mountain Mother

On days I see your beamy smile,
My spirits climb, hours pass so easly.
On days I hear that chainsaw drone,
You don't seem to see me,
Lost in that labyrinth of grey.
Hours pass, each one a day.
Yet long I suffer in hopeful attitude,
To keep you safe, my shielding shelter.
With soft warm words,
"Now, now", I would say'
This corona dream,
A pink blanket against cold steel teeth.
The pitch of my love rings with passion.
Trust this truth, always to remember,
From the snows of December,
Comes April's most noble timber.

Noblesse Oblige

A writers curse to stand in the middle.

This pearl tossed into,
The pool of time and space.
I am ring going on forever.
Each now moment,
Never to be again.
Expanding galaxies,
Alone never,
Together forever.
Always to remember,
We exploded in,
Life, kiss sleep awake.
Dream, you sleeper...
Sleeper, I dream...
In love to awake,
Courage from fear,
Light in darkness,
Becoming thus going,
Expanding galaxies.
Energy we touch,
Remember my love
This Life's Gift.

This November Day

A blur seesaw,
push-pull of teeth dulled by effort tearing through.
Pressure finger holding,
numbed, but focus tight to true.

Oily pungent ribbons streaming,
High pitched wail, a screaming sound-
Bits of flesh teaming,
piles upon the ground.

The effort of the pressure-
The focus of the task,
Burning, biting, delighting-
the terror tearing of the mask.

If by chance you've been there,
and have cut a sapient pole-
How many cut cords,
to warm winter's icy soul?

Mountain Fruit

As summer days slow to fall, so soon to silver moon.
On winding mountain road most tempting, yet just out of reach.
Lessions to teach, how to aquire the objects of my desire.
Timeing is everything in knowing- sweet!
The method chosen to the apple of my eye.
Close is my reach- higher ambition with hand and claw.
Summer apples, first before all others.
Yes! Me a hungery mountain bear.
Dare and delight to climb up,
You that lovely Highland Apple Tree

Cool Clear Water

"Life's journey is not to arrive at the gate safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid sideways totally worn out, shouting, Holy Cow! What a Ride."
Todd Robison, may he RIP.

Each new day I try and remember some little thing that I've learned which will inspire me to live every minute to it's fullest. Yesterday I walked on a mountain top with a good friend and gave a song, a prayer to the spirit who makes life possible.

The water of life is a true blessing.

I may not know where I'm going, but I'm still on track, and headed for Spring Time in the mountains. Ah! The adventure of life... a true blessing.

A Mother's Prayer

As an early morning blanket mist folds up along the mountain peaks waiting for the first warm kiss of sun, I think of you. A cornucopia of memories flow like clear water on its voyage to the sea.
The silence is gently broken. A yellow-breasted meadowlark atop a fence post sings the only sermon it knows. It's song of hope surpasses the loud ear-splitting sound of man's weapons of war.
Somewhere the edge of night is falling, and a mother holds a wounded child to her breast. Black clouds of burning oil fill the sky. Cries of sorrow fall on the malefic ears of the deaf. Blind eyes see only the gain of more mammon as innocent blood soaks through the cloth of peace.
The droit seeds of truth are planted deep into all crazed hearts of stone. The poets gnomon of hope beats...

The Canyons of Time

"Who kissed me from my dream to know that I am still dreaming in another?"
How many lifetimes have passed in sequence as I track her footprints from the sands of Egypt to the snows of Aksehir? To awake from a night dream and know you are in a daydream of your own making is a reality few comprehend. This is my dream, and yet...I am half asleep.
I am in love with a woman who comes willing to me in the night. She is the scent of wisteria, the jasmine that ribbons through the hot summer air of Izmar. Sugar ripe grapes pile high on palm woven disks, fat figs fill baskets, Smyrna casasbas and curshaw melons lay on mlticoloured carpets from the markets of Algiers...none are as sweet to my taste as her smile. The silk of her touch lingers on my lips. The murmur of her voice like music fans my pulse. My dolor cry is carried on the khamsin breeze through the canyons of time...the memory haunts my waking with questions.
Once again, I am born in a desert land. My childhood friends and teachers; the slow moving tortoise, the ever watchful lizards and najas who bask themselves in the spectral waves of the sun's radiant warmth. Wide spread wings of the high soaring condors cast slow moving shadows at my feet, and the whistling cries of the noble sparrow hawk has always filled my heart with remorse and great joy. A paradox of the remembered past and the life I live now, both alive in this moment as I write. Do you think me mad? Perhaps I am.
From the other side of the galaxy I close my eyes...you're here.
How I yearn to touch you and whisper, come nearer, come here my dear.
Must the fusil gain come through the pain?
Our children a delight for all to see, conceived in our fertile bed.
Night's breeze whispers through the palms, dates fatten like their chubby arms.
In the garden they run and play, and laugh and sing.
Is it enough for you to wear my hidden ring?
Hold them close as I hold you in my memory.
The words of love spoken, let nothing be unsaid.
Our passion fruits...each with a name well chosen.
The peg plunged deep, red drops of life like tears weep from my heart.
Me a lonely gypsy...you a high born Noble Queen.
It is a new day. How many light years have passed? An orange and yellow orb peeks over the snow blanketed mountains. The pink and blue of the morning sky separate gray clouds. It is snowing slow falling flakes, which are mesmerizing, yet my senses are keen. The beauty in watching the snow through the bright morning sky is not lost on me. I see it as a gift and yet...
Reality has a curlicue twist in this my current incarnation. Such things I did not believe possible before a cosmic vortex ground me in a mortar to dust. The pestle was fear, she name Moera. Was my cold-blooded murder our of revenge? Was my crime not remembering in time, not being smart enough to look the other way? She, knowing full well I would never turn away, resolute...always searching.
Different, yes I am different now. Moera can never kill my resilient love. I am a respecter of life in all its forms and so forgive. It is true I have killed many, imbued in a fever of fear and a righteous anger at the injury to the children of innocence, but never do I remember the feeling of pure hate. Seeing the ramifications of hate in the blood lust wars of men causes my tears to flow into an ocean of why. All suffer in the pain, innocent, and not so innocent.
My term as an official of holy judgment has ended for this lifetime, and for that I am truly thankful. The aureus diadem of the divine fades like pressed carnations and fragrant gardenias in the family book of my life. What remains, a garland, pearls of wisdom. I can only hope I was of some assistance then and in what life there is left to me.
The water of life is sweet, the cup fashioned by the hand of the maker, a gift. How others think of such things, I cannot say for sure. To speak brings the possible label of madness, but I do not fear...to ask with a humble heart that my be compassionate and merciful seems logical. Who judges me harsher than I judge myself?
Call me quite mad, but I love. I love a queen who has killed me with her sword of truth...her eyes are the colour of the sky on the clearest of days. In my darkest hours she was with me. Through the maelstrom of the unknown I called her name and she answered. No swan on a lake calling to its mate flying high above, could have been more reassuring as her words to me, her guidance brought me home to her side.
As the warm sun rises like the lucent moon, do we forget the spiritual spice of each days lullaby? Say not so. Perhaps she remembers more than I do, she has always been wiser and swifter with a blade, her quill of truth. Is my head hung on her door, my heart at her hearth floor? So let it be written, so let it be done. Even a headless wonder knows happiness is spelled...WOMAN.

Blue Fire

Throughout my days and into night, I search for this and that. This is my life here on planet Earth. This is where they left me. I was to young to remember much; a port window of sorts, the soft black of the always night, and the pointed tip of a long blue flame framed by that window. Not much of a clue, but enough for me to know, Earth is not my only home. Home ha! I have always been a stranger here. From time to time I have seem others who may be like me. The truth be known, we cover the secret of our alienation well.
Deep poles stand tall. Shadows cross mark time. I parry and fence around them. Rusting broken cables loop back to hold tight my mind. Like a bird on a string I long to be free. This place of hooks that hold, is a prison of things that begin one way and end in another. For years I have tinkered, building my craft from bits and pieces found while wondering.
In the darkest of nights I have seen the thin blue flame of those in the sky overhead. I am not a lone eprist. Now through my days and nights, I plot my unfolding parchment scroll. This chart and my ship, Blue Fire will thrust home my alien soul.

Sweet Murmurs

Clio... "this bumpy
ride makes me
horny honey."
Clyde..."you're so
full of s--t."
